Last winter season saw the new Cimalegna chairlift open in Alagna and there are new developments for winter 2018/2019 as well.
The Alagna-Pianalunga gondola will have 11 new cabins added. This will significantly speed up access to the slopes and the entire Monterosa Ski area, increasing the lift’s capacity by about 30%.
Reduced queuing time and faster ascents
This is great news as this is the starting point for all our heliskiing and backcountry groups based in Alagna and will minimise any queuing time and allow more time on the slopes.
Another improvement to the gondola is that the ski racks on the outside of the cabins are being replaced to allow you to easily load even the widest skis. Although this has never been an issue, it does mean that those of you using super-fat skis will no longer have to split them when boarding the gondola.
Amazing views of Monte Rosa
Further up the mountain at Passo dei Salati the entire upper station of the Funifor lift has been renovated and the bar-restaurant housed inside.
Additionally, a 150 square metre wooden terrace has been completed: the views from this of the south face of Monte Rosa and the glacier will be spectacular.
Less relevant for our groups, but still beneficial for Alagna as a whole, are the changes at Alpe di Mera, where the Scopello-Mera chairlift has also been updated. The renovated chairs are more comfortable with new padding and upholstery, and the lift will be about 15% faster.
Snowmaking has been improved with ten new snow cannons and with the increase in pumping capacity will mean the resort’s opening dates will be from 07 December 2018 to 07 April 2019.
